Our
Ingredients
Our
unique
blend of organic flours is high in
protein, dietary fiber, iron and vitamin
B6 (aids in protein metabolism, red blood
cell formation and synthesis of antibodies
in the immune system).
Garbanzo bean
flour (stone ground chick peas) give
our mix a slightly nutty flavor while tapioca and sorghum
flours add a hint of natural
sweetness. Fava flour adds
protein
and flavor; potato starch,
balances consistency and texture.
Calcium
carbonate
is a no sodium substitute for baking
soda that gives a slight rise to our
dough.
Bananas:
a
good source of vitamin C (valuable in the
absorption of iron, synthesis of
connective tissue and blood formation),
potassium (an essential mineral for
protein synthesis and building of muscle)
and dietary fiber. Bananas also
contain a rich supply of vitamin B6.
Apples:
rich
in pectin (a soluble fiber that aids
digestion) and is high in
antioxidants. Our apples are fresh
from the Greenmarket! We strive to buy
local whenever we can, for the freshest
ingredients with the least impact on the
environment.
Coconut
Oil: a medium chain
triglyceride, is readily metabolized for
energy. Research has shown coconut
oil may be beneficial in the management
of many conditions which cause fat
malabsorption, such as inflammatory
bowel disease, small intestinal
bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) as well as
some pancreatic and liver
conditions. Organic. (Read
the
research article)
Cinnamon
is one of the oldest known spices.
It has antimicrobial properties, can aid
digestion and circulation and my help
regulate blood sugar. Our organic
cinnamon is sustainably harvested and 5%
of the Red Ape Cinnamon sales is donated
to programs dedicated to the preservation
and restoration of orangatan habitat.
Coconut is
called
“the fruit of life” in some cultures, as
it is rich in fiber, vitamins and
minerals. Organic coconut flakes.
Vanilla
extract. There is some
controversy about gluten-free vanilla
extract (or any other extract) and whether
gluten survives the distillation
process. Until more research is in
place, we are sticking with our organic
and certified gluten-free vanilla extract
for you and your dog's safety.
Singing Dog Vanilla is naturally aged and
also sugar and corn syrup free.
Honey
is a source of antioxidants and has
antimicrobial properties. Ours is
sourced from the local greenmarket.
With
all-natural
ingredients, a unique
blend of organic bean
flours, fresh fruits
and local greenmarket
ingredients, dogs love
them so much they'll
beg you to keep your
own paws off! Just
don't tell them it's
"health food"!
We have omitted
the most common canine food
allergens such as gluten,
eggs, dairy, animal protein,
corn, rice, soy, nuts and
preservatives while
developing a
nutritious and delicious
treat!*
* Any
single ingredient can be an allergen
for your dog. We have omitted
many common ones from our treats, but
please ask your vet about your dog's
unique needs before introducing a new
food or treat.
We look
forward to meeting your canine
confectionary needs!
Is your
pup on a gluten-free dog food diet?
Don't forget their biscuits
too! Even when the ingredients
are naturally gluten-free, like oats,
they can still contain gluten.
You must be wondering how that's
possible right? On the surface
it just doesn't seem to make
sense. But when we dug a little
deeper, we found out that oats are
almost always grown right next to
wheat and so is usually contaminated,
and therefore does not test
gluten-free! Many grain-free
flours are also contaminated with
gluten.
Other ways that ingredients become
contaminated with gluten are:
Ingredient(s)
are
processed on the same machines as
gluten containing ingredients, such
as wheat, or even oats that where
contaminated in the field, before
ever reaching the processing plant.
Poor
quality control to separate gluten-free
ingredients from gluten containing
ingredients. I've even heard of
grain free and gluten-free dog foods
that simply don't bother to keep their
gluten and non gluten containing foods
from ever touching each other, putting
each in the same containers without ever
really cleaning them out
in-between! Can you believe
that?! Seems like a really simple
step to take to protect the gluten
intolerant dog and person.
Environmental contamination. Flour
creates dust -- and lots of it. If
goods are being made with regular ole
white or wheat flour, or other gluten
contaminated flours (like from oats
grown next to wheat) in the same kitchen
or anywhere in the area of your goods
prior to packaging, you can be fairly
confident there will be some
contamination at some point.
These
are just some of the most common
ways that gluten-free foods can
become contaminated. For some,
this may be more vital than for
others. But for dogs, or the
people who handle their food and
treats, with severe gluten
intolerance, this can be of huge
consequence and can take weeks to
recover from.
